Welding Inspection Of Excavator Booms

08th Dec 2021

Enstruc long arm booms are tested for material safety and performance.

When welding quality is not managed effectively to meet industry expectations, your excavator boom and reputation are at risk. To avoid costly delays due to sub-standard welding procedures, Enstruc’s team of welders are fully qualified in accordance with British, European and American standards. For added assurance we offer independent welding inspection by SGS, a global leader in weld testing methods and metallurgical services.

Our SGS weld testing of excavator booms and arms includes:

  • Welding invigilation – Witnessing weld procedure qualification records and welder qualification tests in accordance with British, European and American standards.
  • UKAS 17025 accredited laboratories – ISO 17025 UKAS accredited laboratories provide metallurgical, mechanical, chemical analysis, pressure and corrosion testing.
  • Visual welding inspection – Certified and experienced welding inspectors perform visual and dimensional checks on excavator boom structural welds.
  • Metallurgical testing – Indepth analysis of steel samples to look for micro-structural defects and different phases present in duplex and super duplex as well as numerous other weld materials.
  • Mechanical testing – A wide variety of mechanical tests on boom welded samples. Also known as destructive testing, they can be used for design purposes and to determine if the variables used to produce a welded joint are acceptable. Mechanical testing allows us to determine a material’s properties, including yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, notch/impact toughness, fracture toughness and hardness.
  • Butt weld testing – Testing butt weld joints to determine the quality, strength, hardness and ductility of the weld. Some of the tests we perform on excavator booms are NDT, tensile tests, bend tests, impact tests, macro examination and hardness tests. These tests, as well as some others, can be used to determine the acceptability of a weld procedure or a welder qualification test.
  • Fillet weld testing – We can determine the quality of a fillet weld joint by performing NDT and mechanical testing. Macro examinations and fillet fracture tests give a good view of the profile, fusion and penetration, and reveal whether there are any imperfections, such as porosity or inclusions, in the weld. These tests are used to test the welder’s ability to weld a fillet weld.
